Rebecca “Beckie” Jane Trumbo Bates was born Nov. 25, 1947, to the late George Cleveland Trumbo Jr. and Josie Irene Dolly Trumbo of Onego.

Surrounded by her loving family, she peacefully entered into rest in her Vienna, Virginia, home on March 19, 2022.

Mrs. Bates graduated from West Virginia University and completed her graduate degree at the University of Maryland. She met her husband, Glen Bates, in Washington, DC, and they began to travel the world together. They enjoyed many global excursions as a couple and with their family. After retiring from a career in the federal government, she continued her passion for travel. Planning her next trip and listening to others’ stories of travel gave her great pleasure. In retirement she became a licensed Washington, DC, tour guide who delighted in sharing her knowledge and little-known facts about the nation’s capital.

She was a member of Vienna Presbyterian Church, where she cherished the Christian fellowship of her Bible study and book club communities. She felt closest to God in the garden and had a green thumb which would have made her agricultural ancestors proud. She was a past president of the local chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society and a member of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides. Her life was richly blessed by a group of dear and treasured friends. Always offering to lend an ear or hand, she leaves a beautiful legacy of a loving, kind, generous and gregarious spirit.

She was devoted to her family and happiest when her family was gathered around her table. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin and friend.

Surviving are her husband, Glen Bates; a daughter, Glenda Bates and partner Poh Soon Teng; a son, George Bates and wife, Brittany Bates; two grandsons, Theo and Nolan; and a sister, Jo Jordan and husband, Bob Jordan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vienna Presbyterian Church or a church of choice.

Funeral arrangements are being made through Money & King Funeral Home in Vienna, Virginia.
