Carroll Reid Eckard, 81, of Churchville, Virginia, passed away Feb. 28, 2025, at Augusta Health in Fishersville, Virginia.

Born on Sept. 7, 1943, in Moyers, he was a son of the late Denver Ray and Bessie Mabel (Hoover) Eckard.

Mr. Eckard was raised in and held membership with St. John Lutheran Church in Moyers, and attended services at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church, as well as Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church.

He was a graduate of Franklin High School’s Class of 1961 and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Known for his strong work ethic, he was employed with Virginia Department of Transportation, where he worked with the bridge crew specializing in concrete and bridge construction. Following 26 years of service with VDOT, he went on to become the owner of C and D concrete, which he operated for an additional 14 years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed bear hunting throughout Augusta and Highland counties in Virginia and time spent helping others.

He will be affectionately remembered as a loving husband, father, and a man who believed in treating people right. But, above all, he most appreciated simply sharing time with his beloved daughter, Kim, who was without question his pride and joy.

Married in 1969, he spent 51 wonderful years with his wife, Joyce (Hull) Eckard before her passing in 2020.

Surviving family members include, his daughter, Kim (Eckard) Wimer of Churchville, Virginia; and a niece, Penny Stump of Franklin.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Willard Eckard.

A graveside funeral service with military rites was held Monday at the Doe Hill Cemetery with Reverend Lester Kennedy and Pastor Stuart Johns officiating.

Active and honorary pallbearers were his special friends including active pallbearers, Bernie Plotner, Dwight Strickler, David Wimer, Danny Griffin, Billy Mullins and Ralph “Little” Shull; and honorary pallbearers, Dee Hoover, J.D. Robertson, Travis Griffin, George Lambert, and Trenton Strickler.

Memorial contributions may be made to Doe Hill Cemetery, c/o Delbert Rexrode, 527 Windrush Lane, Doe Hill, VA 24433.

Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.obaughfuneralhome.com.
