Carl Russell “Rusty” Cooper, Jr., 60 of Cabins passed away on Feb. 8, 2026, as a result of an ATV accident on his farm.
He was born on April 14, 1965, in Baltimore, Maryland, and was the son of the late Carl R. “Buzz” Cooper, Sr. and Peggy L. (Harman) Cooper.
Mr. Cooper was a 1983 graduate of Petersburg High School and was active in baseball, basketball and football. He attended Fairmont State College for baseball.
He was a poultry farmer and a bus driver for the Grant County Board of Education for 25 years. He coached multiple sports with Grant County Little League and Petersburg Junior and High School. He umpired boys’ baseball and girls’ softball over the years.
He was a member of Cornerstone Family Fellowship in Petersburg.
He loved the outdoors and the family farm. He was known for his cooking and baking.
His wife, Tina (Hesse) Cooper, survives.
Also surviving are four sons, David Cooper (Nathan) of Petersburg, Quentin Cooper (Chelsea) of Augusta, Dalton Cooper of Cabins and Greg Wells (Megan) of Maysville; two grandchildren, Aaliyah Goldizen and Annabeth Cooper; a sister, Rebecca Haslacker of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Arlyn Haslacker.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. A funeral service will be at 3p.m. Friday at Cornerstone Family Fellowship with Pastor P. J. Landes officiating. Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery.
