William Allen “Bill” Turner, 84, of Franklin passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
He was born on April 5, 1942, in Covington, Virginia, the son of the late Durward Clement and Mary Elizabeth (Persinger) Turner.
Mr. Turner began his career at an early age, delivering newspapers in Covington, Virginia, proudly delivering 300 newspapers per day. He had also worked for the local paper mill in Covington, Virginia, before enlisting in the United States Navy, at the age of 17, where he served with distinction for 30 years. He rose to the rank of chief petty officer and was a skilled baker within the Navy ranks. His service included a year in Vietnam, exemplifying his commitment and courage. His military affiliations continued beyond active duty as a proud member of the American Legion, VFW Post #9666, and the Navy Memorial, honoring his enduring loyalty and pride in his service.
Following his Navy career, he contributed significantly to his community as the head custodian for 14 years at John Waylon Elementary School in Bridgewater, Virginia. He also worked at the Walker Plant and Lee Jeans Plant, demonstrating a strong work ethic across multiple roles.
His intelligence and kindness shone through in every aspect of his professional and personal life. He led a life marked by dedication, service, and kindness that deeply touched all who knew him.
A devoted family man, he treasured traveling with his family, creating lasting memories that brought joy and connection. He was particularly proud of his role as a husband and father. His greatest accomplishments were becoming a Navy chief petty officer and providing unwavering support and happiness to his wife and their two daughters.
Beyond his family and career, he found joy in watching television favorites like “Let’s Make a Deal,” “The Price is Right,” and WHSV news. He had a passion for building and flying model airplanes and took great pride in competing and winning car shows with his antique car. These hobbies highlighted his intelligent and creative spirit, reflecting a man who valued simple pleasures and cherished time spent with loved ones.
His passing marks the loss of a man who was both deeply respected for his service and beloved for his warmth and generosity. His legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he enriched with his kindness and steadfast presence.
On Dec .11, 1962, he married the love of his life and his wife of 53 years, Rebecca Lee “Becky” (Varner) Turner, who preceded him in death on April 26, 2016.
Surviving are daughters, Tamara Sue “Tammy” Bodkin (Terry) of Franklin and Tracy Lynn Quackenbush (Tobin) of Bryan, Texas; grandsons, William Bodkin of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Conner Allen Quackenbush of College Station, Texas; sisters, Patricia Goss and Mary Alice Turner, both of Texarkana, Texas.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan Zane Bodkin.
Mr. Bodkin’s family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. today the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel with Rich Gardner officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
