The United States Department of Agriculture Special Supplemental Nutrition Program provides nutritious foods, breastfeeding support and infant formula to women, infants and children.
To be eligible for WIC, applicants must meet the following guidelines:
Qualified applicants — pregnant women, women fully or partially breastfeeding an infant up to the infant’s first birthday, postpartum women up to six months after delivery or end of pregnancy, infants up to their first birthday and children from age one until their fifth birthday.
Income eligibility — families that qualify for Medicaid, WV Works or SNAP automatically qualify for WIC, as do infants and young children who are in a foster family environment, household income no more than 185 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines and married or single parents, working or not working, or a father, mother, grandparent or legal guardian of a child under the age of five. Check the income guidelines to see if one qualifies for WIC. Also, if a person is pregnant, add one person to the size of one’s household.
West Virginia WIC income guidelines, effective July 1, are as follows (household size, weekly gross income, bi-weekly gross income, twice monthly gross income, monthly gross income and gross annual income, respectively), one, $568, $1,136, $1,231, $2,461 and $29,526; two, $770, $1,540, $1,669, $3,337 and $40,034; three, $972, $1,944, $2,106, $4,212, $50,542; four, $1,715, $2,349, $2,544, $5,088 and $61,050; five, $1,377, $2,753, $2,982, $5,964 and $71,558; and each additional family member, $203, $405, $438, $876 and $10,508.
