Sugar Grove

Graduation brings a lot of nostalgia, celebrations, and congratulations all around. With that in mind, a 1954 kindergarten report for graduation went like this:
Things I know: I know all the colors, my right and left hand, my address, my father’s name, the four seasons and the pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars.
I can read my name, write my first name, count to 79, use books the right way, listen nicely to stories, and tell rhymes.
I can skip, do what the music tells me, sing the kindergarten songs, play in the rhythm band, and listen to music. I can work with clay, draw, color, paint, cut with scissors, make things with building blocks, play in sand, plant seeds, have had a cooking experience, and sew.
I come to school clean, keep my fingernails clean, take off and put on my coat, hang my coat correctly, tie my shoe strings, be polite, be kind to others and help them, take turns, am careful with my toys and materials, carry my chair the right way, and eat nicely.
All of these are a small feat for the little ones since it takes them longer to complete skills due to a combination of factors, which include individual development rates, brain development, and adjustments to the school environment.
The writer wishes all graduates a well-deserved future. Hard work has paid off. This momentous occasion deserves huge congratulations!
Life’s daily instructions include the following:
- Help set the table and clean up after a meal
- Offer to help carry someone’s heavy bag.
- Ask someone about their day and genuinely listen to their response.
- Let someone go ahead of a person in line.
- Plant flowers or trees to beautify the neighborhood.
Mountain laurel, as well as the rhododendron, is blooming its colors for all to enjoy.
Gentle rains have fallen with more predicted to follow this coming week. No doubt the wind will “scoop” up all the moisture very quickly. A light frost was detected early Sunday morning in some areas.
Quotes for the week are as follows: “Every act of cruelty towards any creature is contrary to human dignity.” — Pope Francis
“There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” — Henri Marisse
“Take a little time out of your busy day to give encouragement to someone who’s lost their way.” — Diana Ross
“Surround yourself only with people who are going to take you higher.” — Oprah Winfrey
“Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people, a heart that forgives the worst, a mind that forgets the bad, and a soul that never loses faith in God.” — Anonymous
Sitting at a picnic table is the best place right now to hear the “Talk of the Grove.”
Kinsley Armstrong, daughter of Bobbie and Tracy Armstrong, is a Pendleton County High School graduate. Congratulations, Kinsley…one’s future is bright!
Evelyn Varner enjoyed visitors on Saturday and Sunday. Visiting were Joyce and Richard Marshall of McGaheysville, Virginia, who also brought Allie and Rema Kesterson of Propstburg, Donnie Smith of Bridgewater, Virginia, and Wilbert Hoosier of Craigsville, Virginia.
This past Tuesday, Phil Downs motored to Romney to visit with friends. He met the new family addition, Bradley Parker Thorne.
The VFW Post 9666 held its annual Memorial Day program at the park. Many were in attendance with light refreshments following.
Bob and Marti Fisher and Ed Rader were Tuesday visitors in the home of Willard and Judy Rader and lunch was enjoyed at Ancient Oak Restaurant. Natalie Nieves of Huntington spent Memorial Day weekend with Willard and Judy Rader. Benny and Linda Custer were visitors Sunday, and Benny, Linda, Natalie, Lorena Hoover and Willard and Judy enjoyed a lunch at the Gateway.
Hats off to Alan Moats who is a retired veteran. He gives so much of himself by volunteering for many activities within the county. To name a few, he does all of the mowing at the VFW park all summer, places flags on cemeteries (Sugar Grove being one of them), and assists with the chicken barbecue. Be sure to thank him for all of his services when meeting him. And be sure, thank a veteran when meeting and greeting.
Clickety-clacks for the chin waggers are as follows:
- The British government clips the wings of ravens which are kept in the Tower of London.
- Captain Nathaniel Palmer discovered Antarctica.
- Orlando, Florida, is known as “The Theme Park Capital of the World.”
- The honeybee is the most popular official state insect, with 20 states designating it as their favorite.
- Bagpipes, although identified with Scotland, are actually an ancient instrument that was introduced into the British Isles by the Romans.
