French Arlan Moates, 86, of Brandywine passed away Dec. 15, 2023, at his home.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1937, at Doe Hill, Virginia, the son of the late French and Fannie Jane (Simmons) Moats.
Mr. Moates attended Franklin High School. He retired in December 1992 from Sugar Grove Naval Base, as a public works supervisor.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, after 11 years of service to his country.
He attended Riverside United Methodist Church and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Sugar Grove VFW #9666, and Franklin Moose Lodge #769. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He had an infectious personality and a kind heart.
His wife, Jerline Marie (Benson) Moates, survives.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind to cherish his memory two sons, Edward A. Moates (Penny) of Franklin and Michael E. Moates (Nichelle) of Brandywine; two sisters, Dorothy Atkins (Jesse) of Mt. Clinton, Virginia, and Helen Mines of Clover Hill, Virginia; three grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Randy (1973) and Brian (1997); and a grandson, Joey (1991).
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Judy Vetter officiating. Military honors were conducted by U.S. Navy representatives.
