Donnie Fray Vandevander, Sr., 84, of Riverton passed away on Sept. 30, 2026, at his home.
He was born on June 27, 1942, in Simoda, the son of the late Arlie Clifton “Pete” and Mary Evelyn (Harper) Vandevander. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ivan and Irma Harper, who raised him.
Mr. Vandevander lived a life marked by steady work, community ties, and the simple pleasures he enjoyed most.
He attended Circleville High School and focused his career on farming and mining. He had worked for 19 years with Buffalo Coal at Mt. Storm, retiring from the union in 2006.
He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Outside of work, he found happiness in the quiet comforts of home. He enjoyed sitting on his porch with his cats, watching the traffic go by.
He was also a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 132 for 53 years and the Pendleton County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years, connections that reflected both his working life and his ties to the community around him.
He leaves behind to treasure his memory a son, D.J. Vandevander (Liane) of Riverton; a sister, Patricia Liller of Riverton; and two grandsons, Lucas (Macee Ours) and Layton.
He was also preceded in death by his companion of many years, Cynthia “Cindy” Jordan (September 2026); and his nephew, Tim Wimer.
In honoring his wishes, his body has been cremated.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Osiris Shriners in Wheeling or the North Fork Rescue Squad.
