County Youth Say ‘Goodbye’ to Animals at Fair Sale

The grand champion market beef at the Tri-County Fair was exhibited by Bailee Kiger.

After weeks of working with cattle, goats, hogs and lambs, Pendleton County FFA and 4-H members sold their animals Aug. 2 at the Tri-County Fair livestock sale in Petersburg. The sale consisted of 259 animals (62 hogs, 55 steers, 49 goats and 93 lambs) exhibited by youth from the tri-county area. All market animals were sold by the head.

Grand champion market hog was exhibited by Paxton Miller of Grant County. EXP Realty purchased his 233-pound hog for $5,000. The reserve grand champion hog was exhibited by Georgia Hahn of Hardy County. Her 282-pound hog sold for $5,000 to Hawse Health and Hahn Medical.

Three Pendleton County youth sold market hogs.

Lindsay Smith’s 278-pound reserve champion heavyweight hog fetched $1,700 from L&N Enterprises.

West Virginia Paving purchased Brynleigh Ruddle’s 225-pound hog for $1,200.

Olivia Gonshor sold her 256-pound hog to West Virginia Construction for $1,700.

The supreme champion market beef was shown by Bailee Kiger, a Pendleton County FFA member. Pendleton Community Bank, Rockingham Cooperative, Southern States of Moorefield, Mountain View Veterinary Services and Buckhannon Stockyard purchased her 1,394-pound steer for $6,000. Miller also exhibited the supreme reserve champion market beef. His 1,478-pound beef was bought for $8,000 by All Construction.

Other Pendleton County youth selling market beef were the following (name, weight, price, buyer): Lydia Heavner (reserve champion carcass steer), 1,396, $5,000, Mineral Fabrication; Tori Heavner (reserve champion market heifer) 1,029, $6,500, Chisler Brothers; Kelby Rumer, 1,185, $5,000, All Construction; Adalyn Rumer, 1,064, $4,750, Judy’s Drug Store; Ruddle, 1,136, $4,750, Harmans Cottages; Branson Smith, 1,495, $7,000, AJR Farms, LLC; Hannah Heavner, 1,205, $5,500 Streby Farm; Lindsay Smith, 1,137, $4,500, Greer Lime Company; Katie Heavner, 1,253, $5,000, Greer; Hannah Schell, 1,181, $4,500, Greer; and Emily Schell, 1,275, $5,000, Mineral Fabrication.

The grand champion market goat was shown by Tanner Hinkle of Grant County. Potomac State College purchased the 79-pound goat for $6,000. The reserve grand champion goat, 74 pounds, was exhibited by Jaelyn Rumer of Grant County, who bought her goat back for $2,750.

Ty Heavner of Franklin exhibited the grand champion market lamb. His 130-pound lamb fetched $4,000 from Teets Cattle Company Lost River Butcher Block. Kallie Keyser of Upper Tract received $3,500 from Custer Farms for her reserve grand champion 143-pound lamb.

Also selling market lambs from Pendleton County were the following (name, weight, price, buyer): Hannah Schell (grand champion carcass lamb), 127, $2,000, Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks Telephone; Breymann Keesecker, 103, $1700, Virginia Poultry Co-op; Katie Keyser, 153, $2,000, Mountainview Veterinary Services; Aubriana Holloway, 143, $1,600, Arther Mart; Owen Champ, 115, $1,100, Greer; Tori Heavner, 145, $1,900, Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks Telephone; Marley Champ, 140, $1,400, City Electric; McKenna Hedrick, 136, $1,700, Greer; Britlee Basagic, 124, $1,500 Burke and Herbert Bank; Emily Schell, 142, $1,100, Greer; Aiden Whetzel, 120, $1,400, Hott’s Ag Service; Maycee Woods, 125, $1,300, John Paul Hott; Piper Hubbard, 144, $1,000, Hott’s Ag Service; and Madalyn Griffin, 131, $2,400, Potomac River Farm.
