Five Pendleton County students represented the county at the Region 8 Social Studies Fair held March 16 at Musselman High School in Inwood.
Ross Pownell, a student at Franklin Elementary School, earned first place with his project “The Lego Story.” He advances to the West Virginia State Social Studies Fair April 10 in Charleston.
Kaylee Teter, a Pendleton County Middle School student, earned third place for her project “The Chilling History of a Mountain State Mystery.” The project featured Mason County’s Mothman. The original siting of the cryptid was in the 1960s, but the Point Pleasant monster continues to live on for many. Her project emphasizes that local legends are still important to the culture in West Virginia for both the young and old.
Earning honorable mention were Skye Dahmer and Hannah Heavner. Dahmer, a student at North Fork Elementary School, titled her project “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.” Heavner, an FES student, chose “Nutella” as the title of her project.
Also participating in the event was Ava Bowers, a PCMS student, with her project “Secret Hideaway in the Mountains.”
