Richard Dale “Huie” Mullenax, 71, of Blue Grass, Virginia, passed away March 5, 2025, at his home.
He was born Aug. 23, 1953, in Blue Grass, Virginia, a son of the late Joseph Thayer and Mildred Mae (Mullenax) Mullenax.
A mechanic, Mr. Mullenax had worked at Hull’s Shop in Blue Grass, Virginia, for more than 20 years and was exceptional with wiring.
He was a member and former captain of the Highland County Volunteer Fire Department. He was raised in the former New Church United Methodist Church.
A very kindhearted person, he loved time spent with family. He enjoyed driving throughout the county, listening to bluegrass and country music, watching action movies and westerns, as well as playing chess and pool. He absolutely disliked modern technology, such as computers and smart phones.
Above all he will be remembered as being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who was a good-humored “go-getter” and loved helping his neighbors.
His wife of 45 years, Sharon Ann (Simmons) Mullenax, survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, LeJetta Marie Mullenax of Blue Grass, Virginia; brother, Larry Mullenax of Cuchillo, New Mexico; two sisters, Barbara Bennett of Riverton and Janet Mullenax of Blue Grass, Virginia; grandchildren, Damiaen Mullenax of Mill Gap, Virginia, and Jeremy “Junior” Allen, Lidia Allen, LeVayda Allen and Latasha Windett; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Derrick Allen Mullenax; and two brothers, Joseph, and Donald Mullenax.
A funeral service was held Tuesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, Virginia, with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Interment followed in Blue Grass Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lanny Wimer, Shea Mullenax, J.W. Tidd, Damiaen Mullenax, Harold Simmons Jr., Pat Hull, Bill Will and Delmas Lowry.
