Sheldon Byron Bowers, 85, husband of Joan (Judy) Bowers of Staunton, Virginia, passed away on May 5, 2024, in the Shenandoah Nursing & Rehab in Fishersville, Virginia.
Mr. Bowers was born on May 18, 1938, in Pendleton County, “Thorn,” a son of the late Zachariah and Ida Merle (Eye) Bowers.
He was a faithful member of Linden Heights Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the Job Sunday School Class, taught Sunday School for many years, and served on numerous committees.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was retired from DuPont after 43 years of employment. He enjoyed traveling, taking bus trips, NASCAR, and was an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers. He loved his family and especially enjoyed taking his grandkids to Disney and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 64 years, are a daughter, Pamela Johnson and husband, Jeff of Staunton, Virginia; two grandchildren, Kayla Bridge and husband, Joseph, and Zachary Johnson, all of Morgantown; a niece, Twila Decker and husband, Fred of Staunton, Virginia; a nephew, Bill Hott and wife, Lisa of Middlebrook, Virginia; a cousin, Bill McQuain and wife, Margaret of Blacksburg, Virginia; and a number of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was also preceded in death by two half brothers, William Bowers and V. Roy Bowers; a sister, Belva Hott and husband, Blake; a special aunt and uncle who raised him from childhood, Albert and Amanda Wimer; and a great-grandson, Weston Miles Bridge.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. May 15 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory in Staunton, Virginia. A celebration of life will be conducted at 2 p.m. May 16 in Linden Heights Baptist Church by Pastor Luke B. Smith and Rev. Michael Fitzgerald. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Jeff Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Joseph Bridge, Andy Judy, Doug Judy, Ed Judy, Bill Hott, and Scott Decker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill McQuain, Dale Humphreys, Gary Guyer, Scott Almarode, Elwood Eppard, Rodger Moyers, and Charles Lambert.
