To the editor,
On a Friday afternoon, at the bottom of North Fork Mountain Road, I had the opportunity to meet about a dozen beautiful human beings.
As it turns out, a deer decided to dismount me from my motorcycle. A call to the Pendleton County Emergency Services brought out a village of beautiful humans. There were at least half dozen vehicles that poured into that lonely valley that afternoon and I was surrounded by a dozen volunteers.
It is rather difficult, now, to describe what it meant to be literally surrounded by an ocean of empathy. My heartfelt thanks to every hand that reached out to me that afternoon. All deserve the name of human according to Saadi, a Persian Poet
“Human beings are members of a whole
Of one essence. One soul
If one member suffers in pain
Other members uneasy will remain
If you have no sympathy for that pain
The name of human you cannot retain.”
I now know a dozen people, who meet Saadi’s definition of “human.” Thank you all.
