Berlie C. Sponaugle, 93, of Franklin passed away June 21, 2022, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.
He was born June 30, 1928, at Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Ray Sponaugle and Pauline Wimer Sponaugle.
Mr. Sponaugle was a 1947 graduate of Franklin High School and a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked at and later owned Franklin Home Service, and over the years constructed many houses in the Franklin area. He enjoyed being a cattle and sheep farmer and tapping the trees on the farm to produce maple syrup. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church and was one of the Franklin Rescue Squad’s first Emergency Medical Technicians. He served on the Franklin Town Council for 20+ years and was a member of the Franklin Ruritan Club.
On June 25, 1947, he married Dolly J. (Waggy) Sponaugle, who preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 2020.
Surviving are two daughters, Jeanne (Jesse) Eckard of Franklin and Karen (Richard) Hamilton of Mathias; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Mae (Champ) Sponaugle of Franklin; three granddaughters, Stefanie Aumann (Garrett) and Melanie Sponaugle, all of Franklin, and Joleah Tharp (Brett) of Mathias; two grandsons, Adam Eckard (Natasha Bowers) of Franklin and Mitchell Sponaugle (Haley Wright) of Fairmont; three great-granddaughters, Brooklyn, Mercedes and Tatum Aumann; a great-grandson, Greysen Eckard, and Baby Tharp, who will be arriving in July; a brother, Gaylon Sponaugle (Ruby) of Franklin; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special canine companion, Susie.
A son, Jed Bradley Sponaugle, and two brothers, Olin Sponaugle and Merle Sponaugle, also predeceased him.
Mr. Sponaugle’s request was that his family commemorate his life privately with a graveside service and interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with Pastor Mike Loudermilk officiating.
