A series of events are scheduled at Monongahela National Forest’s Seneca Shadows Campground Amphitheater. A person does not need to be a guest of the campground to attend. All programs are free of charge and sponsored by the Eastern National Forests Interpretive Association, in cooperation with American Land & Leisure. In the event of inclement weather, programs will be moved to the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center Auditorium. All programs are subject to change or cancellation at any time.
Scheduled programs include:
Aug. 19, 7:30 – 9 p.m. — An evening with bats. Join Leslie Surges of Bat Conservation and Rescue of Virginia to learn all about nature’s flying bug zappers and eavesdrop on their echolocation calls. The event starts with a live bat program, followed by a short walk to look for bats using bat detector equipment.
Aug. 26, 7:30 – 9 p.m. — “Mon Mania! Are you smarter than a Forest Ranger?” Find out at this interactive gameshow for all ages. Earn points, win prizes, roast s’mores, and learn a little more about Monongahela National Forest along the way.
Sept. 2, 7 – 9 p.m. — Music with Crandall Creek. Since forming in 2015, this bluegrass band has received significant chart success and reached many career milestones. In 2022, Crandall Creek’s single, “Molly Burns,” debuted at No. 7 on the Bluegrass Today Top 20 weekly chart.
Sept. 3, 7:30 – 9 p.m. — Scaling the Rocks. Has a person ever wondered how people climb Seneca Rocks? Join Matt O’Brien, climbing ranger, for a brief history of the climbing techniques and equipment used to scale the rocks.
For more information about these programs, contact the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center at (304) 567-2827. The center is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The Historic Sites Homestead is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
