This makes the 11th year for the woolly bear snow prediction in Pendleton County. The caterpillars had planned on retiring after their 10th year of weather predicting, but thanks to a friend who captured 22 of the little guys, the 2023-24 winter snow prediction has been made. The caterpillars were released back into the wild after making their prediction.
According to the black bands on the caterpillars, Pendleton County is going to have 79 days with snow falling from the sky. This is the largest number of snowy days the woolly bears have ever predicted.
Last year’s prediction was for 71 days, and according to county snow watchers, the county only had 61. It will be interesting to see if this year’s prediction is more accurate. October had five days with snow. There have been two in November, so only 72 more snowy days to go!
