The youth livestock sales figure Aug. 6 at the 101st annual Tri-County Fair in Petersburg was above and beyond what fair officials anticipated.
The sale of 182 market animals set a new record with the gross sale being $392,800. Twenty-six steers were sold with the average sale price being $4,165.64. The average sale price for 52 hogs was $1,806.73. Fifty-seven market lambs averaged a sale price of $1,679.82 with $1,454.17 being the average sale price of 47 goats. All market animals were sold by the head.
“We had a great set of animals at the fair this year and an even better set of youth exhibitors,” commented Trey Keyser, chairperson of the 4-H/FFA market steer, lamb, hog and goat sale committee. “The youth livestock sale was exceptional and prices received for animals set new records for the sale. The support from local businesses and individuals of our tri-county youth was amazing and made the youth’s livestock projects a huge success.”
Grand champion market steer was exhibited by Marlie Cook of Grant County. Mineral Fabrication purchased her 1,439-pound steer for $5,000. The reserve grand champion steer was exhibited by Chloe Miller of Hardy County. Her 1,271-pound steer sold for $4,000 to Miller Farms.
Two Pendleton County FFA members exhibited market steers.
Lindsay Smith showed the reserve grand champion carcass market steer, 1434 pounds, which fetched $4,000 from Mountainview Veterinary Services.
Greer Lime Company purchased Trina Mallow’s 1,045-pound market steer for $3,800.
Grand champion market hog was shown by Makinley Branson of Hardy County. Allegheny Wood Products purchased the 276-pound hog for $3,000. Mineral Fabrication paid $1,200 for the 279-pound reserve grand champion market hog which was exhibited by Ava Riggle of Grant County.
Two county youth showed market hogs.
Smith’s 266-pound market hog was purchased by Greer Lime Company for $1800.
Marissa Hoover sold her 296-pound market hog for $1,900 to Diamond G. Farm.
The grand champion market goat was shown by Kelby Rumor of Grant County. Teets Cattle purchased the 86-pound goat for $3,000. The reserve grand champion goat, 83 pounds, was exhibited by Bailee Kiger of Moyers and was sold for $1,700 to Mountainview Veterinary Services.
Other Pendleton County youth selling market goats were the following (exhibitor, animal weight, price, buyer): Lydia Heavner (reserve grand champion carcass), 95, $2,700, Helena Ag-Services; Reagyn Atkins, 73, $2,500, Potomac River Farms; Tia Heavner, 78, $2,200, Greer Lime Company; Ryleigh Cook, 72, $2,000, Greer Lime Company; and Jaimee Carr, 62, $1,700, Greer Lime Company.
Cook also exhibited the grand champion market lamb. Her 150-pound lamb fetched $5,200 from Smoke Hole Caverns and Teets Cattle. Phoebe Pownell of Franklin received $2,000 from Greer Lime Company for her reserve grand champion 144-pound lamb.
