The Pendleton County FFA chapter hosted the Eastern Regional scholastic contest on April 22.
FFA members from East Hardy and Petersburg traveled to Franklin to compete in the contests.
McKenzie Vandevander from Pendleton County took the top honor in the freshman creed contest. Petersburg FFA member, Regan Welch, placed second with Shaye Barb from East Hardy placing third.
The FFA Creed Speaking Career Development Event is designed to recognize outstanding FFA members for their ability to present the National FFA Creed in a competitive setting. Members deliver the creed from memory and respond to three questions. The event allows the FFA members to develop their ability to communicate in a powerful, organized, and professional manner.
In the prepared speaking leadership development event, Adalyn Rumer from Petersburg earned first place. Placing second was Jocelyn Sherman from East Hardy, and Pendleton’s Alex Adams finished in third place.
During the prepared speaking contest, students write and deliver a six- to eight-minute speech about a current agriculture-related topic. The speaking skills gained through this event help students excel in school, community, and career.
Ty Heavner, a member of the Pendleton FFA, delivered the winning speech in the extemporaneous speaking contest. Annah Helmick from Petersburg placed second.
In the extemporaneous public speaking LDE, participants are given 30 minutes to deliver a speech on one of three assigned agricultural topics. Students must learn to think on their feet and develop an argument quickly and persuasively.
Pendleton’s parliamentary procedure’s team, consisting of Jax Bennett, Callie Dunn, Sam Eason, Lani Fertig, Katie Keyser and Kaylee Teter, finished in first place.
The purpose of the parliamentary procedure leadership development event is to encourage students to learn to participate in a business meeting and meetings of organized societies effectively and to assist in developing their leadership, research, problem-solving skills and critical-thinking skills.
All first place winners will represent the Eastern Region in July at the State FFA Convention held at the Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley.
