To celebrate World Poetry Day, the Friends of Pendleton County Library will host a poetry sharing event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the library community room. All are invited.
Participants can share poems by favorite poets or their own creations, or just come and listen. It will be an informal gathering to celebrate the fun and inspiration poetry brings.
Held annually on March 21, World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity.
World Poetry Day honors poets, revives oral traditions of poetry recitals, promotes the reading, writing, and teaching of poetry, fosters the unification of poetry with other arts as in theatre, dance, music, and painting, and raises the visibility of poetry in the media.
Because poetry brings people together throughout the world, all are invited to celebrate with the Friends of the Library.
The United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization first adopted March 21st as World Poetry Day in 1999.
