The Pendleton County Library was the recipient of the book “Genealogical, Burial & Service Data for Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in West Virginia” compiled by the West Virginia State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. This book was the project of Cheryl Brown, former West Virginia State Regent, and was created as a companion to the book, “Genealogical, Burial & Service Data for Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in Virginia” produced by the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution. That book did not include the counties that became part of West Virginia in 1863.
Based on DAR ancestor listing, more than 2,000 patriots might be buried in West Virginia as well as other patriots who have not yet been accepted by the DAR. As a result of the research and work of WVDAR chapters, this publication includes 1,030 names of Revolutionary War patriots who were proved to be buried in West Virginia. Other information in each listing includes the spouse’s name, a brief biography of the patriot, burial location (with GPS coordinated if available), and the type of service (military, civil or patriotic) provided by the patriot. Sadly, not all graves could be found for various reasons, such as burial sites that have been lost to construction, loss of gravestones, or a lack of gravestones.
This book is a valuable resource for those persons interested in finding the resting place of their ancestral patriot and could possibly stir interest in others to discover more Revolutionary patriot gravesites. Their memory should be honored.
The Daughters of the American Revolution is a volunteer service organization dedicated to the preservation of history, promoting patriotism and the education of our children. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. DAR volunteers are available and willing to assist with guidance in genealogy research for women interested in becoming a member.
