Stanna Louise Smith, 84, of Upper Tract departed this life for her heavenly home on May 10, 2024, while a resident at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.
She was born Feb.13, 1940, at Franklin and was the daughter of the late Russell Burton Propst and Verna Hammer Propst.
Mrs. Smith was valedictorian of the Franklin High School Class of 1958. After graduation, she and her good friend, Linda Hammer Hoover, worked at the FBI as file clerks in Washington, DC. She returned home to be the secretary at the Pendleton County Board of Education.
On Sept. 10, 1961, she married Samuel J. Smith. While residing in Morgantown, she did clerical work at West Virginia University.
After her two young children became school age, she started work at the Pendleton County Bank. She retired from the Grant County Bank in 1997 after 19 years as a loan officer.
She was a member of Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, serving as secretary and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She loved cooking, baking, gardening, and researching family history.
Her husband of almost 63 years, Samuel J. Smith, survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Melissa Smith Lambert and husband, Steve of Riverton; a son, Will Smith of Alexandria, Virginia; a sister, Alma Propst and husband, David of Baltimore, Maryland; a brother, Max Propst and wife, Mildred of Franklin; a grandson, Kevin Lambert and wife, Jessie of Elkins; a granddaughter, Rachel Parsons and husband, Jeremiah of Parkersburg; a brother-in-law, Ronald “Ron” Gilkeson of Dayton, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Velda Jean Gilkeson; and a nephew, Lance Gilkeson.
A funeral service was held Monday at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church with Pastors Paul and Sherri Schafer officiating. Interment was at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.
